Domain Name System (DNS)

Domain Name Systems or DNS, is the organizational convention used to name any computers or systems that is connected to a network or the World Wide Web. DNS servers are responsible for associating domain names to a numeric representation that computers can understand. This is needed because computer system work in binary numbers and so alphabetic letters are not recognized by them. So they need to be converted through a Domain Name System server.

So when you type in a domain name like Google.com into your web browser, that domain name is converted by a DNS server into an IP address and then routed to the appropriate server network on the World Wide Web that Google.com is being served on. This all happens within fractions of a second.
