File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

File Transfer Protocol or FTP for short, is a type of network protocol that has only 1 purpose. In basic terms, it is a communication standard designed to transfer files from 1 computer to another whether locally or over the Internet.

A misconception is tha FTP is some sort of software but really it is just a set of rules and procedures for how files are moved. The way FTP is employed is through the use of an FTP client. An FTP client is the actual software that makes use of the FTP standard.

There are 2 ways to utilize FTP configurations. It can be used through whats called an Anonymous FTP where no username or password is required or user based login where a username and password is required to connect with a server that holds the files. Anonymous FTP is generally for public use such as libraries, schools, and government agencies that wish to make documents or files available to the general public.

User login based connections are designed for private use such as within a company wishing to share its documents onlyl with employees of the company. The vast majority of people using FTP will use a login based protocol.
