Maintaining Your Website

In order to create a well designed website, it takes imagination, fresh ideas, effort, time and ,often, money. But once your website is created, you have only completed the first phase of website ownership. In fact, after creating a website, the next step is to come up with a well thought out plan to maintain and update it on a regular basis. Many people make the mistake of just creating a site and then never making changes or improvements. If you are able to place fresh content on your website by implementing a schedule of new content, your website is likely to gain in popularity and become regularly visited by a large number of people. However, if you fail to upgrade and maintain your website, you are likely to fall further and further down the search engine rankings as well as your visitors favorite pages to visit.

Depending on what your website is about and what you want it to do, maintaining a website can be as easy as spending a few minutes a day to hours of work each night. Maintenance involves ensuring that the files, file directory structures and, especially, links, are kept intact and functioning all the time without any errors or problems. Most, if not all, websites are usually created with a HTML editor such as Microsoft Frontpage or Macromedia Dreamweaver which creates the HTML documents and graphics for you. But from time to time, it becomes necessary to make sure those links and pages still work properly because human or technical errors can arise every time you work on your website. Nothing is more frustrating when it comes to websites then when you can’t see the pages or images that you are supposed to on the site.

So what’s the best way to maintain your website? You have to come up with a good maintenance schedule to ensure your website does exactly what it is supposed to do that you initially created it to do. In addition, part of the maintenance schedule needs to include updating the information on your site and adding new and fresh content on a regular basis. If you don’t update your site with new content, you don’t give your visitors a reason to come back. This is probably the biggest and most common mistake new webmasters make.

It’s important to stay abreast of the latest news and technology that is related to the information on your website. It would be a good idea to solicit what your viewers are talking about and what they are looking for. Based on this information you can decide on how often you want to update your website.

For ambitious website owners and webmasters, hiring a person or company to take care of the maintenance and updates of your website may be an option that is worth the cost. Especially for business owners or people who are looking to make money from their websites. The investment and the time freed up can be worth the cost. You may be able to maintain and update a small or personal website on your own, but for businesses that are looking to grow, regularly updates will be needed and as the website grows, maintaining and updating can become harder and more time consuming. It is recommended that hiring a professional be highly considered when you just can’t do it yourself.

So whether you decide to take care of your website yourself or hire others to do it, having and implementing a maintenance schedule is the best thing you can do for your website.

Also, don’t forget to keep track of your domain name and hosting. I didn’t keep tabs on when these expired and I lost my domain, freeheart.com
